Background DRESS TO PROTEST Project
With Dress to Protest, FASHIONCLASH and STUDIO EUROPA are calling on young people to participate in design workshops that bring people from different backgrounds together to exchange ideas about Europe. With the imaginative power of fashion, they shape their visions and personal stories about Europe.
What do young people think about Europe and today's challenges? Dress to Protest does not literally call for protest, but in a playful way it focuses on awareness that the clothing we wear tells, consciously and unconsciously, something about our identity, values and norms. The project makes a connection with the verbal and non-verbal communication strength of fashion. Fashion as a means to tell stories, to represent personal identity, to share visions and to put urgent issues on the agenda. Because fashion as a second skin tells your environment what relationship you want to have with it and at the same time shows what your heart beats for.
Dress to Protest uses fashion as a beautiful instrument to actually mean something in the debate on political, humanistic and social issues in Europe. Can we use the power of the concept of Europe for a peaceful and inclusive world?
Based at Studio Europa in the heart of the city, Maastricht, Working on Europe tackles key European themes on a daily basis. We want to position the Limburg capital as the place to be for citizen dialogue and debate on Europe. In short, a workplace for a better Europe, for everyone.
Underpinned by an interdisciplinary research agenda and the European Heritage Label project, we aim to create a Centre of Excellence with stimulating and thought-provoking year-round events open to all.
Maastricht, Working on Europe is a joint program of the Province of Limburg, the City of Maastricht and the University of Maastricht.

FASHIONCLASH en STUDIO EUROPA nodigen je uit om je eigen Dress to Protest- outfit, bord of spandoek te maken en te presenteren op het FASHIONCLASH Festival van 1-3 november 2019 in Maastricht. Laat je creativiteit stromen en ontmoet andere jongeren met een passion for fashion!
Voor wie?
De Dress to Protest Workshops zijn voor jongeren (18- 25 jaar) uit Maastricht en de Euregio. Ervaring met mode ontwerpen is geen vereiste.

Achtergrond DRESS TO PROTEST Project
Met Dress to Protest roepen FASHIONCLASH en STUDIO EUROPA jongeren op om deel te nemen aan ontwerp-workshops, die jongeren van verschillende achtergronden samenbrengen om van gedachten te wisselen over Europa. Met de verbeeldingskracht van mode geven zij vorm aan hun visies en persoonlijke verhalen over Europa. Alle outfits worden gepresenteerd tijdens de 11e editie van FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019 in november.
Hoe denken jongeren over Europa en uitdagingen van de huidige wereld? Dress to Protest roept niet letterlijk op tot protest maar zet op een speelse wijze in op bewustwording dat de kleding die we dragen bewust en onbewust iets vertelt over onze identiteit, waarden en normen. Het project legt een relatie tot de verbale en non-verbale communicatiekracht van mode. Mode als middel om verhalen te vertellen, persoonlijke identiteit te verbeelden, visies te delen en prangende vraagstukken te agenderen. Omdat mode als tweede huid je omgeving vertelt welke relatie je ermee wilt hebben en tegelijkertijd toont waar je hart voor klopt.
Dress to Protest zet mode in als een mooi instrument om daadwerkelijk iets te betekenen in het debat rond politieke, humanistische en sociale vraagstukken in Europa. Kunnen we de kracht van het concept Europa inzetten voor een vreedzame en inclusieve wereld?
Vanuit Studio Europa in het hart van de historische binnenstad werkt Maastricht, Working on Europe ook dagelijks aan Europese vraagstukken. We willen Maastricht neerzetten als werkplaats voor Europa: dé plek waar het debat over Europa gevoerd wordt, en waar we samen kunnen werken aan een beter functionerend Europa. Voor iedereen.
Dit doen we op drie gebieden: een Centre of Excellence oprichten voor onderzoek naar Europa en Europese integratie; evenementen organiseren die inspireren en aanzetten tot nadenken; en het uitdragen en tot leven brengen van het Europees erfgoedlabel voor het Verdrag van Maastricht.
Maastricht, Working on Europe is een gezamenlijk programma van de Provincie Limburg, de Stad Maastricht en de Universiteit van Maastricht.
Dress to Protest is een samenwerking tussen FASHIONCLASH en STUDIO EUROPA.
