In the last week of June 2024, FASHIONCLASH organized a one-week residency during which ten fashion practitioners reflected on questions of decoloniality, in the Dutch context in general, and in relation to fashion more specifically.
The residency program contained discussions, making sessions, walks, and conversations with guest speakers Zinzi de Brouwer, Sandra Niessen, and representatives from the The Linen Project, Crafts Council Nederland and Tailors & Wearers.
The residency took place at The Masters Home, located in Wyck. The participants stayed at The Green Elephant Hostels.
The ten participating fashion practitioners were: Agatha Prieto Jeanty, Angela Jansen, Andrea Kristic, Catta Labeij Donkersloot, Gabrielle Swart, Kenza Vandeput, Kuiyu Kang'ari, Lena Winterink, Robin Nimanong, Tevin Blancheville
We have started the residency with conversations and an inspiring introduction from Sandra Niessen. Then we went for a walk, exploring the area to find a connection with the locality. Where are we? Why are we here? And later this translated into questions about 'home' and where do you come from / where do you feel at home? In principle there was no framework and there were no formats. The only fixed starting point was a piece of linen fabric made by The Linen Project. On this blank canvas (5 meters of linen) we started to depict our conversations, associations, intuition, etc. through handicrafts, material processing, etc.
The Traveling Cloth
Following the residency week, a textile (linen) cloth traveled to Spain, Rotterdam, Amsterdam together with individual participants who organized activities within their own communities.
